Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla , USA ( May 2, 2014 ) –  NEC Series-PGA TOUR Latinoamérica added a seventeenth event to its 2014 schedule Friday with the addition of a new event, the Ecuador Open. The event, to be held in Quito, Ecuador September 22-28 signals a positive, fundamental step for the sport in Ecuador.

The event to be held at Quito Tennis and Golf Club in Ecuador’s capital will be the ninth event of the second half of the PGA TOUR Latinoamérica season which brings the total reach of the Tour to 17 tournaments in 11 countries for the 2014 season. Ecuador joins Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Chile, Brazil and Argentina as host countries of the final stretch for players seeking a spot among Los Cinco and membership on the Web.com Tour.

The Ecuadorian Golf Federation and their operator Golf News Ecuador worked hard to get an event organized and are excited at the prospect this event has for the growth of the sport in Ecuador. “It was extremely important for us to organize this tournament and have the guidance of the PGA TOUR on how to advertise and promote golf in our country,” said Enrique Peñarredonda, President of the Ecuadorian Golf Federation. This process took several years to come to fruition, we had several meetings with PGA TOUR Latinoamérica officials and are delighted that we are now able to work together in order to provide golfers the best tournament possible,” said Peñarredonda.

For Jack Warfield , President of PGA TOUR Latinoamérica, the addition of the Ecuador Open is the culmination of a lot of hard work between the Tour and the Federation to reach this point, “Adding  Ecuador to our schedule brings me great satisfaction. One of the main objectives of PGA TOUR Latinoamérica is to grow the sport in Latin America by providing the platform necessary for its growth. Establishing a new event in the Ecuador Open will contribute to the development of young players there while joining a prestigious group of fellow National Opens in the region.”

The tournament will have the support of Ecuador’s Ministry of Tourism, a destination that offers great places to visit such as the Galapagos Islands, the Baños de Agua Santa , National Parks and its beaches that are ideal for surfers. “We want to showcase Ecuador to the world and feel that sport is the perfect window to display all the natural wonders that exist in our country. Golf is a sport that is growing rapidly in Latin America and we wanted to ensure its impact is felt in our country,” said Vinicio Alvarado, Ecuador’s Minister of Tourism.

The Quito Tennis and Golf Club is a par 72, 7,248 -yard course that was founded in 1947 and is surrounded by mountains and beautiful vegetation. It sits 2700 meters above sea level a feature sure to add an additional challenge to the players.

The addition of Ecuador to the schedule is part of a strategy that the Federation has to promote golf in the country. The Ecuador Open, in conjunction with the inclusion of the Developmental Series Final at Los Arrayanes Country Club puts Ecuador at the center of the Latin American golf movement.
